Hi Chris,

Cats and pigs (along with foxes, rabbits, rats, goats and many other animals which have since become pests) were introduced to Australia by European settlers since 1788. Some were deliberately released: foxes and rabbits for hunting and to make Aust seem more like "home" to settlers. Rats just jumped ship when they arrived. Cats and pigs were probably domestic animals which escaped and liked their new wild life.

I'm pretty sure dingoes were the only the only animal introduced by Aboriginal Australians.

I should probably read Franklin's book, and will, but in the mean-time - can you tell me if there were cats and pigs on the same boats which brought the first dingo 3500 years ago?

I have no doubt as to the effect of feral animals on the environment- I have seen it... However I am also a cat owner (a responsible one, I hope!).

I am concerned that a lot of the good work in controlling the feral cat and dog population is being undermined by pet owners unwilling or unable to get sterillisation for their animals. This is especially the case in the remote rural area where I work, where services that are taken for granted in the city are unavailable or vastly expensive out here.

May be there should be a cat licence along with the dog licence- make it free for sterilised cats (and a reduction in the licence for sterilised dogs) and use the money raised to sponsor the operation for low income earners.

Just a thought!
